Northshore TU Chapter Meeting
Tuesday May 3 at 7:30 PM
American Legion Hall, Bothell
Guest Speaker: Larry Wasserman, our next speaker, is director of environmental services for the Skagit River System Cooperative. His topic will be the impacts upon Skagit River salmon and steelhead habitat and why people need to get involved. He said he will discuss factors that are contributing to the ongoing loss of salmon and steelhead habitat in the Skagit and the reasons they are taking place. He has a masters degree in fisheries from the UW. Kids Fish-in: Our annual Kids Fish-in is coming up this June 4 at 7am-12. Held at Tracy Owens park in Kenmore, this is an event not to miss. Last year we hosted around 200 kids of all ages. The chapter will provide fishing gear and bait for the kids, we encourage parents to bring a rod if they can. The WDFW will again provide the rainbow trout to go in the fish pen on the lake, there will likely be some big brood stock as well. The Fish-in is a great way to turn kids onto a healthy sport like fishing, it’s also a lot of fun for the chapter members to help the kids learn to fish. We will need additional volunteers to help the kids, please contact Larry Holley (425) 7434510 to help out if you can.
Barr Creek:
A special thanks to the brave Northshore members that endured the steady cold rain on Saturday March 26 to plant over 300 cottonwood and willow saplings at Barr and Kissey creek. The effort was part of the chapters restoration project that we started this last fall. We were fortunate to have the trees donated by the Snohomish Conservation District. The stream was doing well, it was good to see our woody debris was still holding well after a big high water event this winter. The flooding covered our wood by about 12 feet, the anchors did there job quite well. The trees will provide additional shade for the streams and will help prevent bank erosion also. While planting the trees I came upon a genuine Steelhead Redd in Barr Creek. That was really great news, Dick Barr the property owner also mentioned that he had seen 3 adult Steelhead in the creek this year. This project is showing some fruit of our hard work over the years.
